Oil, Muscle & a Grip on Tradition

Inside Turkish Oil Wrestling—and Why Hands Go Inside the Trousers

Provocative Wave For Men Exclusive Article

Two men step onto the grass, bare chests gleaming with olive oil. They circle, reach, lock up, and search for a hold that will stick. Then one slides a hand inside the other’s leather trousers.

If your first reaction is, “Wait—what exactly am I watching?” you’re asking the question that brings plenty of newcomers to Turkish oil wrestling.

Look closer. Beneath that striking first impression is a demanding contest of balance, leverage, patience, and strength.

What Is Kumluca Oil Wrestling?

Kumluca hosts traditional oil-wrestling competitions in Turkey. The sport itself is known as yağlı güreş, or Turkish oil wrestling; Kumluca is a competition location within that broader tradition. An official district report documents its 25th traditional tournament in 2024. [1]

The wrestlers, called pehlivan, wear leather trousers known as kıspet and coat their bodies in olive oil. The slippery surface changes the entire contest: an apparently secure hold can disappear just as a wrestler tries to use it. [2]

Watching becomes more interesting when you stop following only the muscles and start following the hands, feet, and shifts in balance.

What Is the Object?

A familiar winning finish is to force an opponent onto his back—the position often described as making his belly face the sky. Another traditional route to victory is lifting an opponent clear of the ground and carrying him three steps. These are examples of winning finishes, rather than a complete tournament rulebook. [2]

That sounds straightforward until the man you are trying to lift is strong, resisting, and covered in oil.

Why Do Hands Go Inside the Pants?

The explanation is practical: the leather trousers provide something to grip when oily skin will not.

Wrestlers can reach inside the waistband to secure a hold on the kıspet, creating leverage to control, lift, or turn their opponent. Grips around the trouser legs also feature in the sport. The placement may surprise a first-time spectator, but it serves a wrestling purpose. [3]

Think of the trousers as part of the equipment. Once you understand that, an unfamiliar movement starts to look like a tactical decision.

Strength Has to Work Under Pressure

From a movement perspective, oil wrestling challenges far more than arm strength. Pulling and resisting involve the back and shoulders; maintaining position calls on the trunk, hips, and legs. A shifting opponent demands constant adjustments.

Those observations are an interpretation of the sport’s movements, rather than a measured fitness study. Still, the lesson is easy to see: strength becomes useful when you can coordinate it.

A wrestler who commits too soon can lose his position. One who keeps forcing a failed grip may waste energy. Watching the contest offers a reminder that patience and timing belong alongside power.

For PWFM readers in their 50s and 60s, that is a worthwhile idea to bring into the gym. Pay attention to controlled movement, balance, and technique as well as the weight on the bar. There is satisfaction in becoming more capable.

The Tradition Includes Character

Turkey’s best-known oil-wrestling festival, Kırkpınar in Edirne, was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. UNESCO’s description emphasizes generosity, honesty, respect for traditions, and the relationship between masters and apprentices. [4]

That gives the sport another dimension. The contest sits within a culture that values how a wrestler behaves as well as how he competes.

For PWFM, there is something compelling about that combination: physical confidence, competitive intensity, and respect for the men who share the field.

Watch Beyond the First Impression

The oil catches your eye. The leather trousers raise questions. The strategy keeps you watching.

Follow the next match closely: which wrestler establishes a useful grip? Who holds his balance? Who waits for the opening, and who spends his energy chasing it?

You may arrive curious about where the hands go and leave impressed by what it takes to win.
