There’s a New Distraction on The Road: Flirting

Normally, when we talk about distracted driving, we’re talking about cell phones or text messages, but according to ABC News, there’s a new distraction on the roadways: Flirting! Why? Because we spend so much time in our cars, they’ve become an extension of our social life. An insurance company took a survey of 3,000 drivers, and here’s what they found: Almost half of them admitted they tried to flirt with other drivers or pedestrians while behind the wheel, and 15% admitted they crashed their cars or had scary near-misses because they were looking at an attractive fellow-driver. Men are more likely than women to ‘flirt while driving.’ Half of them admitted to it. While only a third of the women did. Six percent of men admit they chose the car they bought specifically to attract women. What car is considered the biggest chick magnet? The Aston Martin, because that’s what James Bond usually drives.

One man mentioned in the article said he and his friends constantly flirt on the road, but he nearly crashed his Mazda into the back of a Jeep while gaping at a pretty girl on the street. He was humiliated and she walked away. Ian Crowder is the spokesperson for British car insurance firm Double-A. He says that while a lot of crashes occur because of flirting, drivers are usually too embarrassed to admit their mistake. He also points out that if you flirt behind the wheel, you’re a lot more likely to have an accident than to get a date.
